This Wildfire Health Community Advisory Board curriculum was developed by the LA Fire HEALTH Study team to help share clear, actionable information about urban wildfires with affected communities.
The first CAB meeting includes important explanations about what is found in smoke, what we know and what we don’t know about the health impacts of wildfires, vulnerable populations, and how to reduce exposures through various actions.

We really need some results even if preliminary. Insurers are pushing people to return to still standing residences in high burn areas. Residents and workers are spending more time in areas that almost assuredly are contaminated. We need to know the safety issues of the air and the soils now.
We live in Marquez Knolls and our standing house is surrounded by burn. There is elevated lead in the soot inside our house and on the property. Ours is not an uncommon situation, but we have little objective data to tell us how to proceed. We spend 2-3 hours a week at the house, and we experience a metallic taste in our mouth and congestion.
